| The Wordsworth Gateleg Table | |||||||||||
We were very pleased to discover this charming
little table as it simply exudes the quintessence of country charm. By
placing the table in Wordsworth House, The National Trust are recognising
its probable origins. Having spent much of its recent history a little
further south in Lancashire, the table first came into The Trust's possession
from a Grasmere property given to them in 1979. During the seventeenth
century, gateleg tables were made in all sizes from those which doubled
as stools to the huge "double gates" capable of seating up to
sixteen people. Our Wordsworth example is compact but easily able to seat
six when required. Its feet could almost be described as a restrained
country version of a "Spanish foot". Together with the distinct
turned legs, we would suggest the early eighteenth century as its likely
date of construction.
