| The Wordsworth Chair | |||||||
The oak chair standing in Wordsworth House
is bold and simple. The unfretted vasiform splat retains an echo of the
Queen Anne period but the outward turn of the top rail, albeit fashionable
before the middle of the 17th century, was firmly established with the
publication of Chippendale's Director in 1754. Country Chippendale neatly
describes a wide range of vernacular designs that pick up on a mixture
of local styles together with these fashionable classical influences after
about 1760. Although its specific origins and arrival at Wordsworth House
remain unknown, this chair with its unfussy lines would have been a familiar
design to William Wordsworth (born in 1770). Similar styles continued
to be made in country workshops well into the 19th century.
