| The Townend Cricket Table | |||||||
A huge variety of small folding tables evolved
during the seventeenth century, including a circular type with three drop
leaves supported by hinged flaps and standing on three legs. The top,
a diminutive triangle when closed, proved useful in crowded taverns and
smaller rooms. The boards forming the triangle are in three equal ‘pie’
sections arranged to allow the grain of the timber to run parallel with
that of the adjoining drop leaf. This creates an attractive feature from
a practical need. Further evolving the design, the Townend Cricket Table
ingeniously allows the raising and dropping of all the leaves by simply
incorporating a pivot. Rotating the top through 60 degrees provides ease
of closing and ample support when open. The tapered legs are fairly typical
of late 18th century and early 19th century cricket tables and lend a
provincial dignity to this clever little piece. The original at Townend
was gifted to The National Trust in 1985.
