The Erddig Cupboard

This solid oak, boldly panelled clothes press is copied from the fine example sitting proudly in 'The Red Bedroom' at Erddig, for centuries home of the prosperous Yorke family. Its dimensions make it a useful piece for any home and the robust confident style would sit comfortably in either a 'minimalist' or traditional setting. The frieze carving '1719', executed in a charming naive style, is five years into the reign of George I. It would therefore be reasonable to surmise that the similarly carved 'G R' is in deference to his status a reigning monarch.

Interestingly, although the cupboard had probably spent its entire life on the estate, it had only come into the possession of the Yorke family early in the twentieth century. Fortunately, in 1924, Louisa M Yorke (the last chatelaine of Erddig) recorded the following in her journal entitled 'Fact
and Fancies at Erthig on the Dyke': 'The wardrobe dated 1719 was brought to Erthig about 1904 from Felin Puleston (a hamlet on the edge of the estate) in part payment of rent when an old tenant went into the Work House, to end his days' ...Usual practice at the beginning of the twentieth century but seemingly merciless a century later! Its acquisition has, however, secured
its survival in 'pride of place' at Erddig and serves as a mark of the wholesome good taste of the 'old tenant'!
