| The Beatrix Potter Dresser | |||||||
| To walk into the Hill Top entrance hall is
to walk into everyone’s dream of a country cottage. The muted light,
the worn flagstone floor, the warm glow of the range, the comfy old chairs,
knarled oak table and… in pride of place… The Dresser. This
rural idyll, dearly loved by Beatrix Potter is shared with us all through
her captivating and enduring ‘Tales’. The Tale of Samuel Whiskers
(published by Frederick Warne & Co.) is set around Hill Top and clearly
shows the dresser just as it stands today. To capture this magic, the dresser was ‘a must’ for ‘The Collection’. Almost certainly Edwardian, it was probably bought new soon after her 1905 acquisition of Hill Top. Georgian design was enjoying a revival and the dresser has many 18th century characteristics. The reduced height of the cabriole legs allowing a more commodious base is however, a typically ‘down to earth’ Edwardian modification. The end result is a wonderfully nostalgic and hugely practical piece of homely rural furniture… exactly what Beatrix Potter would have wanted!
