| The Baddesley Clinton Tripod Table | |||||||
|
To walk into Baddesley Clinton, a magnificent moated manor house, is indeed a gratifying experience. Perhaps to select for re-creation, a comparatively modest oak tripod table amidst such a vast array of magnificent furniture, is somewhat surprising . but look closer we believe this modest country piece to be a little gem! The raised rim or tray top is an indicator of quality more typically found on fashionable mahogany tables and dumb waiters of the period. The turned gun barrel stem is supported by a spirally reeded or wrythen knop, another clear mark of quality. Such design features were seen on tripod tables from about 1750 and continued in use throughout the remaining half of the century. The table is at the same time classically Georgian and yet decidedly country. As such, it is probably from the latter part of that period and could safely be described as George III. We know little of how and when it arrived at Baddesley Clinton but can surely assume that whenever it was its endearing charm ensured that it had come to stay!
