| The Rufford Old Hall Dresser | |||||||
| Having found the mule chest in the great house
itself, our visit to the Old Kitchen tearoom was to reward us further
with more than just light refreshment! We were confident that one of The
National Trust properties would yield a definitive 18th century Welsh
dresser with cupboard base and rack. As we stepped into the tearoom…there
it was! A perfect example of a Northern Welsh oak enclosed dresser of about 1730, it had been bequeathed to The National Trust in 1987 in the will of the late Mrs. A.M. Goss. Although Mrs. Goss had lived near Cirencester, the dresser almost certainly had not originated in that area. The rack has boldly shaped sides and although of a similar date to the last of the earlier style canopy dressers …it is a fully evolved Welsh dresser, the general style of which was to continue to be made for well over a century. It is clearly without its original handles, but as the later brass knobs now seem to be so much an endearing part of it, we have decided to retain them on our example.
